Experts argue that tooth whitening is safe and effective for treating discolorations

The new teeth whitening techniques, based on the use of chemicals or intradental extradental application, make this intervention as a "conservative therapeutic alternative, safe and effective" for the treatment of dental discolorations.
With age there is a physiological change color and darkening of the teeth that sometimes is aggravated by food, intake of coffee, tea, food dyes and other substances such as snuff and some medications, such as tetracycline .

However, as explained by Dr. Carolina Manresa, of Plénido Quality Dental Group, this discoloration can be treated by the new techniques of whitening getting a satisfactory result "in most cases".

Recently came into force a European Directive (2011/84) that limits the use of tooth whitening products to health professionals, to avoid risks arising from the lack of supervision or improper use.

In this regard, Dr. Manresa recalled that tooth whitening is a relative contraindication in cases of sensitive teeth, gum disease and periodontal disease, which is exposed tooth root.

"There are also cases where it is absolutely contraindicated, such as dental caries or untreated cases of unprotected areas of the tooth, defects in enamel formation and during pregnancy, in which although there are clinical control, it is best to wait, and according cases, patients may be discouraged in heavy smokers, because not last, "he explained.

Currently, the choice whitening products are hydrogen peroxide, with which you get a faster whitening but more chalk-white, and carbamide peroxide, the whitening is slower and more gradual but bright and durable.

General recommendations are to use Hydrogen Peroxide for whitening clinic and carbamide peroxide whitening home and in all cases, and in order to obtain better results, it is recommended that dental cleaning prior to whitening.

WHITENING THE DURATION OF MAY VARY

In duration affects the cause of discoloration, or the initial color of the teeth, while the result also depends on the type of bleaching agent used, the concentration, the duration and the number of times the agent is in contact with teeth.

Also, says Dr. Manresa, each patient responds differently to the application of whitening gels, so "have to combine three parameters (light, time and concentration) individually for each patient in order to make treatment safe, comfortable, while for rapid and lasting whitening effect. "

For tooth whitening and immediate phase when treatment, teeth are slightly more susceptible to capture external pigments, just as they are more sensitive to temperature extremes.

For this reason, during and after the treatment, it is advisable not smoking, maintaining proper oral hygiene and rinse with chlorhexidine-based mouthwash.

It also has to avoid drinking dark beverages (tea, coffee, red wine and coke), frozen drinks or acidic (pineapple, kiwi and citrus fruits), red fruit (cherries, blueberries) and dark green vegetables (broccoli , spinach), colored sauces (bolognese, soy sauce) and foods containing food coloring (saffron, curry) at a temperature too hot.
